Abstract: The Boltzmann equation is very important in a number of high-tech fields such as the space exploration, plasma and the semiconductor simulations. However, the numerical cost of solving the Boltzmann equation directly in large systems is still unaffordable. The highly efficient numerical solvers are needed to solve this problem. Or, people may build the simplified models instead of directly solving the Boltzmann equation, where the moment method is the main method. The numerical difficulties in different application areas also vary greatly and are always hard to solve. Numerical methods to solve the Boltzmann equation are also widely used in these related application areas.

Recently, the research on direct Boltzmann solvers and moment methods together with their applications are very active. The purpose of this mini-symposium is to gather most representative researchers and report their progress. It invites speakers from different parts of the world and provides a good opportunity to exchange ideas.
