J.M. Sanz-Serna

I completed a PhD in Functional Analysis at the University of Valladolid (Spain) in 1977. I studied Numerical Analysis at the University of Dundee (Scotland) in 1977-1978 and most of my publications have been in this latter field. I worked for a while at the University of the Basque Country and, in 1982, I became full professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Valladolid. In the period 1998-2006 I left mathematics completely as I served for two four-year periods as Rector (President) of the University; this is a full time job since the institution has more than 30,000 students. Since 2014 I hold a so-called chair of excellence at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

I have mainly but not exclusively worked in numerical differential equations (ordinary or partial), in particular in structure preserving methods (geometric integration) for Hamiltonian problems. In recent years I have become very interested in stochastic issues. At present I chair the mathematics section of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain and I am a fellow of SIAM, the AMS and the IMA (United Kingdom).
